Hello, readers This is our new Thinking task on Metaphysical poetry given by Dr. Dilip barad, Do come and join us.

A group of poets emerged new style of poetry known as metaphysical poetry the writers of the era followed the footsteps of John Donne they tried to follow the style of writing poetry which was initially cultivated by John Donne.  The new poets of 17 century do not willing to continue writing poetry in the same manner just like a Shakespeare, Spencer,  Philip Sidney, Christopher Marlowe and others. It was a conscious attempt on the existing and cultivating a new writing style of poetry which is different from the former poets of the era.

"CHARACTERISTICS OF METAPHYSICAL POETRY"

                    

Sensual spiritual & has often religious  , it focuses on love, as the union of soul.	considered highly ambiguous & obscure due to high intellect & knowledge.	expression of one’s idea & thoughts, various figures of speech which provide pleasure .	Platonic love ,spiritual love, which is free from elements of physical love.	Skillful use of wit and conceit, exhibition of learning,harsh versification	Passionate thoughts,religious and dramatic element, Directness of speech	Abrupt beginning, Harsh rhythm, scientific speculations,language
Ordinary speech mixed with puns paradoxes,Daring imaginary	Argumentative presentation of emotion, colloquial language	Highly intellectualized, use of frequent paradox , complicated thoughts.	Wholeness: human being+emotion+intellect+body+saoul	complex sentence patterns, philosophical & divine thoughts.	Disruptions in poetic meter,use of hyperbole and allusion. • THE THEME LOVE, PHYSICAL TEMPTATION, BIBLICAL ILLUSION

  "WOMAN'S CONSTANCY "

This poem based on the idea on "one night stand"he questions the the excuses of the women after the one night stand.the main subject is the lack of constancy women. John Donne trying to express woman's constancy  locality, faithfulness .

• THE THEME OF ALLUSION , IMAGERY, SYMBOLIC AND HATING

"FIRE AND ICE"

In this poem the force of fire is equated to the emotion of desire while that of ice is equated to hate. frost brilliantly uses language in the poem which contrast with the terror of apocalypse he talks about.

• THE POLITICAL, RELIGION, IRONICAL, PHILOSOPHICAL AND REBELLIOUS  THEME.                                                                                         

" THE PARADISE LOST"

The poem takes place at what CHRISTIANS BELIEVE  to the bringing of human history, paradise lost primarily focuses on the BIBLICAL STORY OF " THE FALL OF MAN"

• THE THEME OF METAPHYSICAL CONCEIT, WIT, ALLUSION, FANTASY AND SEXUAL DESIRE.      

  "ELEGY XIX: TO HIS MISTRESS GOING TO BAD"

John done used a wit and detachment in describing the male lovers aggressive persist of women. Donne creates a parody of the conventional love and an early specimen of libertine poetry.

• THE THEME OF PARADOX, COMPLEX SENTENCE, IMAGINARY.       

   "BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP FOR DEATH"

Dickinson subject choice, death, is dealt with in an odd, imaginative way. the poet takes the reader on a mysterious journey through time and on in to a world beyond time.
