"The Term Metaphysical"

META Beyond
       PHYSICAL:  The physical,The Earthly existence
The Metaphysical: spiritual, abstract, intellectual philosophical poetry

"Pioneer of the term"
As mandeliya sir said two eminent personality handed this term in The Renaissance era.
Samuel Johnson who  for the first time used to the term "Metaphysical poetry" Donne was the  pioneer ,it is known as the "school of Donne"  or  "school of metaphysical poetry"
Abraham Cowley : He exaggerated John Donne's "metaphysical wit" he tried to apply this world metaphysical in his interpretation of poem.

"Major metaphysical poet"
John Donne
George Andrew marvel

A group of poets emerged new style of poetry known as metaphysical poetry the writers of the era followed the footsteps of John Donne they tried to follow the style of writing poetry which was initially cultivated by John Donne.

" Day one "

"The conscious Attempt"

The new poets of 17 century do not willing to continue writing poetry in the same manner just like a Shakespeare, Spencer,  Philip Sidney, Christopher Marlowe and others. It was a conscious attempt on the existing and cultivating a new writing style of poetry which is different from the former poets of the era.
very high conscious attempt to differ in the style of writing poetry made by the metaphysical poets.

"Two reasons for the desire to defer from the former poets."
#Aware of the fact as well as current tests.
#invention of printing press, expanding education and literacy a lot.

"Far Fetched Images"

Far fetched images consist one more feature of the metaphysical. Almost the metaphysical poets dependent upon the far-fetched images for their poetry the selected images from those field which have nothing common with poetry the image with the used belong to the field of science engineering agriculture biology architecture political science and many other fields far fetched images proved to be a remarkable feature of their poetry and it is to be found in all the metaphysical poets.

"Mandaliya sir has a very "Unique style of teaching " his spontaneous words , presence of mind as well as melodious way of reciting poems have look..."

  • "Poetry Analysis"

"The sun rising"

#Theme of Happy Love
#Importance of love
#joyous fulfilled love
#Manner of expressions
#Tune of singularization
#Simple pointed full of metaphors

In the sun rising the lover bird in the universe and the walls are spheres. So the conceits in Donn's poems are the spark that eliminates the whole poem and import to the poem scholarly quality.

For the more better explanation Mandaliya used a appropriate and historic examples such as " Tulsidas " "Kalidas " "Kamaladas"and and a very eminent movie "Geet Gaya pattharon ne "by Jayendra, Raj Kapoor's movie" Jagte Raho". This examples ironically related with the theme of of this poem.

"The Holy sonnet"

#Death is a slave
#anthropomorphizing Death is equal and inferior
#Death think himself as a powerful and terrifying

The holy sonnet deals with death sin and the struggle against the flesh. Attempt of the poet is to nullify fear of death .generally people consider death is a mighty and dangerous frightening and very painful but the poet reacts all together in a different way to death.

" Day Second"

"The Flea"

#expression of love
#Central object small insect
#sex
#marriage
#shame and guilt
#witty and pleading tone
#erotic metaphysical (love) poetry

"The flea"  Donne celebrate the physical side of Love, remarkable example of metaphysical poetry. Donne taken a biographical image  of a flea to do with the theme of love with the help of metaphorical object insect, in the present poem expresses his love for a woman and tries to convince her in a very logical and lucid way.

"The Dream"

#Erotic metaphysical poetry
#Address by a lover for his beloved
#Dreams based on logic not imagination

Through this poem the poet wants to convey that live in reality can never be so much interesting and joyful is life in dream and fantasy.

"Sweetest love, I do not go"

#final separation(real death)
#anxiety
#physical death(just a jest)

This poem about death in love. physical death is no death at all but separation is a real death in love.poet attempt to convince his beloved not to be sad because of his fast or preaching physical death. It is just a physical death nothing more than jest and  joke.
Mandaliya sir Express his thoughts through the use of example of Indian cinema such as movie "kalakar " and "Amar prem".

" Day Third"

"The Ecstasy"

#Experience of abstract feeling
#abstract idea
#oneness in love
#importance of a physical Union

the poem uses religious and mystical experience to interpret the complexity and depth of secular love.we can say that in the love there is a silence better than words the pure love that no one can destroy and the emotionally going way to their love at the first sight it's always be there like of forever.

This a very fruitful expert lecture organize by Dilip Barad sir.

I am glad that you have very well documented the whole session of Sir.
The moment I come across the words like metaphysical poetry, John Donne etc Mandalia Sir's rhythmic recitation reverberates my ears:-
    "Busy, Old Foole, Unruly Sun
Why dost thou through the windows
    And through curtains
    Call on us?"
His unique style of teaching, musical reading aloud and lucid explanation have also inspired my way of teaching. Thus, his sessions can also be observed from the ELT point of view. Thanks Prof. Barad sir for organising this event and providing me a chance to have a slice of this priceless session.
