Samuel Barclay Beckett's documentary  on " Breath..."

Here ,I am going  to Share my view on following topics, Samuel Barclay Beckett's documentary  on " Breath..." in form of PowerPoint presentation made by me( Tamsa Pandya) So let's start our journey of learning together...

This task is given by Prof. Dilip Barad Sir for better understanding absurdity and ridiculousness into the Beckett's play. as we are now studying MA sem-3 and our pertinent unit " Waiting for Godot" is an absurd play, so after watching and analyzing this documentary we will get more clear idea about absurd play and how to study absurd plays,  So here I put link of task which given by Prof. Dilip Barad sir, an Here is the blog by our prof,

Samuel Barclay Beckett's journey of life between 13 April 1906 to 22 December 1989. He was an Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, theater director, poet, and literary translator. A resident of Paris for most of his adult life and he wrote in both English and French languages.

Beckett's work offers a bleak, tragicomic outlook on human existence, often coupled with black comedy and gallows humor, and became increasingly minimalist in his later career. He is considered one of the last modernist writers and one of the key figures in what Martin Esslin called the "Theatre of the Absurd."

Here is my PowerPoint presentation on particular activity,

The script of the play:-

1. Faint light on stage littered with miscellaneous rubbish. Hold about five seconds.

2. Faint brief cry and immediately inspiration and slow increase of light together reaching maximum - together in about ten seconds. Silence and hold for about five seconds.

3. Expiration and slow decrease of light together reaching minimum together (light as in 1) in about ten seconds and immediately cry as before. Silence and hold about five seconds.

According to this script i try to justify this documentary along with justification of symbols and various point of view.

Here, I am sharing my one reflective view through one video , our task was to make a video with taking help of materialistic things and then interoperate in to our words, but i have already done my PowerPoint presentation on it, so this is one more activity which  i like to do, as an experiment with creativity,

my hypothesis is that with this practical video i can explain the very idea of existentialism in more clear way,

My Interpretation of  video,

Here i took one character who is badly beaten by man in patriarchal society,  with the first look of this video we won't find any clues of considering this  video as academic course, but it has deep meaning of  absurd state of mind, what creates a an absurdity in life? many factors are there, but what important is that how and which ways we are try to tackle everything.

The character in video is now at the condition of making suicide, Her Hopelessness, disappointment towards life is now no more much live...so this practical video is denoting the pre-condition of anyone's absurd individual state of mind.

is she going to commit  suicide, or she is died already?

What is the physical and mental state of her mind and body?

she will rebel?

she will find her quest for existence of be happy?

after that incident will she able to make herself free from all?

What's about her freedom?

Philosophical suicide and physical suicide,

After watching this video we will definitely understand the pre-condition of absurd mind, now we need to interpret that how we can connects this ideas with Absurdity and existentialism, the uncomfortable, unexpected, embarrassing kind of situation  creates Absurdity in life and mind, it also arise the questions of Existence, way i am here, what i am doing, why i am doing, what will be the result etc.,

This uncomfortable situations blocking the ways of freedom and intellectuality, this mess impact one's mind hugely and leads towards physical death, the character would  choose this also or she can make believe in the universal force of savior( god, religion) it call philosophical death.

If we talk about the very idea of suicide then there should be the freedom of  choice and expression are there, existentialists  are very renowned thinkers they believe in freedom of actins and expression.

the same way i am using this freedom of expression through making creative videos and all...😊😃

In the documentary of " Breath" by Samuel buckett we find that breath is most important, rather then materialist things or other how we can breath in uncomfortable situation is more vital then anything, the prevention of breath is crucial .

Anyone's suicide can be studied as an theory of physical or philosophical suicide, with the perspective existentialism , because it has a questions on absurdity, questions for self. existentialists  are believer of freedom and individual value.  So, al last the character can choose either her life as being valued herself, or can live in a unconscious  state of mind where no questions of self-existence will rise.

In this video i took the symbols of Social construction of female/male mind , female body as a symbol of dominance , patriarchy, male dominant society

What is absurd play?

A term used to characterize the work of a number of European and American dramatists of the 1950s and early 1960s. As the term suggests, the function of such theatre is to give dramatic expression to the philosophical notion of the ‘absurd’, a notion that had received widespread diffusion following the publication of Camus's essay Le Mythe de Sisyphe in 1942. To define the world as absurd is to recognize its fundamentally indecipherable nature, and this recognition is frequently associated with feelings of loss, purposelessness, and bewilderment. To such feelings, the Theatre of the Absurd gives ample expression, often leaving the observer baffled in the face of disjointed, meaningless, or repetitious dialogues, incomprehensible behaviour, and plots which deny all notion of logical or ‘realistic’ development..

Waiting for Godot” is an absurd play

Waiting for Godot” is an absurd play for not only its plot is loose but its characters are also just mechanical puppets with their incoherent colloquy. And above than all, its theme is unexplained. It is devoid of characterization and motivation. So far as its dialogue technique is concerned, it is purely absurd as there is no witty repartee and pointed dialogue. What a reader or spectator hears is simply the incoherent babbling which does not have any clear and meaningful ideas. Nothing special happens in the play, nor do we observe any significant change in setting. The situation almost remains unchanged and an enigmatic vein runs throughout the play. “Nothing happens, nobody comes … nobody goes, it’s awful!”

Thank you
