This thinking activity task given to us for mental excercise by Dilip Barad sir, so that we may utilise it in coming time..

Angel wings can be seen as a symbol of God’s presence and as an expression of one’s faith. They are prevalent throughout Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Angels are believed to be messengers from Heaven who are here to love, support, comfort, protect, heal and guide us.
• They can simply symbolize a long and affection for angels or angelic spirits
Other associations include
Purity
Love
Faith
Courage
Compassion
Perseverance
Renewal
Protection
Generally wings are associated with the spiritual higher evolution of the soul
The Greek Goddess with white wings " Nike" is a symbol of ' victory' 'goodness' 'power and motivation' .
In Dr. Fautas we can say that Lusifer weares a white wings , symbolic victory on God , Evil are more powerful than God. LUCIFER with white wings is a Disguisement of Truth and faith . Also breaches the religious Faith.

2) Is God present in the play? If yes, where and how? If No, why?
Is very difficult to clarify the conflict about existence and non existence of god
Significantly, i have two counter argument for this particular confusion....
Significantly, i have two counter argument for this particular confusion....
- EXISTENCE OF GOD we may say that there is invisible presence of god .god was not appears thought the whole play. we can see as god with some good characters such as,
- A GOOD ANGEL
- THE OLD MAN
- THE CHORUS
- A GOOD ANGEL
The good Angel us a voice of god and spirit that urgent fosters to repent for his pact with Lucifer and return to God along with the old man .The angel appears at fosters shoulder early in the play good Angels urging him to repent and serve God. good angel constantly tries to away from black magic. good angel is Faustus's conscience.
- THE OLD MAN The old man( human being) a Divine figure warriors in the final scene the old men origins Faustus to repent and to ask God for Mercy and forgiveness. The old man was the last try by god for Faustus conscience.
- THE CHORUS this is a very important figure in end of the play. the speeches of the chorus emphasis how far Faustus has strayed from the path of goodness. he is a viewer of the Faustus's fate. chorus as a voice of god at last.
we can also say that their is a no existence of god in the play , we should clear in our mind that god is rarely even mentioned in the entire play and is never a presence , thought his life in the play Faustus alienating himself from the presence of god, demanding himself in preparation for eternal alienation from god in hell.
- God is a designer of the world so death could come at the hands by the law of god .
- if god exists than he/she surely saves the life of Dr. Faustus when he was repenting and asking for mercy and forgiveness.
- if god exits than why Dr. Faustus goes to the Lucifer for help. Fastus could have asked to the god directly .
- if god exists than he/she must have removed the evil angel in Faustus's life. Evil angle could have urged Faustus to follow his lust for power and serves to Lucifer.
3) What reading and interpretation can be given to this image (see the image of Daedalus and Icarus) with reference to central theme of the play Dr. Faustus?
Have you had that dream where you flying? i have. I'm not taking about plans and other air crafts , I'm talking about The story of Daedalus and Icarus is a popular myth of Greek . It is a story that is often attributed to the Roman poet Ovid in his magnum opus Metamorphoses.
The general theme of the story involves the ingenuity and brilliance of man, and the misuse of that brilliance that can often lead to our own downfall. He was described as an inventor and a scholar whose ingenuity and intelligence was unmatched by any other.
Daedalus collected the feathers of the numerous birds that roosted in his tower prison. He constructed a set of wings with help of some laces , He then constructed wings for his son Icarus, . When the wings were complete the father and son prepared to jump from the tower and fly to freedom. Before they did so, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too low to the sea, as the mist would dampen his wings and cause him to fall.
He also warned the young boy not to fly too high as the warmth from the sun would melt the wax that held the feathers and cause him to fall to earth. Daedalus warns:
To wing your course along the middle air;
If low, the surges wet your flagging plumes;
If high, the sun the melting wax consumes:
Daedalus and his son leaped from the tower and soared across the land and out to sea. The farmers and herders stopped their work and looked up at the duo flying like birds. The citizens of Crete thought that the pair were gods, never before had they seen such a miraculous sight.
True to his father’s predictions, Icarus flew too high and the heat from the sun began to melt the wax holding the feathers in place. Soon, the wings disintegrated entirely and Icarus plummeted down through the air. He screamed in fear as he tried to fly away, yet his wings were no longer capable of flight. He splashed into the sea and drowned.
Daedalus looked for Icarus diligently. He would cry out “Icarus, Icarus where are you?!” He finally found his body floating among the waves, feathers strewn about the surf. Daedalus lamented the death of his child and buried his body in the nearby land. Daedalus named the land Icaria, in memory of his son.
The inventor would later travel safely to Sicily, where he would build a temple to Apollo. He hung up his wings to the god as an offering. He never took them down; Daedalus would never fly again.( vantifire)
The fall of Dr. Faustus also relates to the myth of Icarus, the concept of the wax wings taken as a enormous ambitious of Dr fautas. His lust for power and knowledge, his dream to be like God leads him to tragedy and even end of his own Life. I want to make some interpretation for both the things...
DR. FAUSTUS. ICARUS
- Warned by Mephistopheles
- warned by his father
- Faustus want to get knowledge of universe and power like God
- He wants to touch The sun and fly high and high in the sky.
- Fastus wants to confess God at the last night and he realized that he committed a mistake
- When the wax wings are starting melting and he falls towards land he realized that he committed mistake.
The same narration is also presented in the ramayan according to the legend sampati and jatayu both sons of Arun the legless charioteer of of the sun god. Jatayu and sampati who had the from of vulture. Once again in the younger age held a competition to fly higher in the sky the younger brother jatayu flies higher and higher and was about to reach in the " Suryalok" he could not resist the burning flames of the sun and was about to get seared by the intence heat of the sun. Seeing this sympati spread his own wings in the form of shield to save jatayu from the hot flames.though he could save jatayu but his both wings are were Burnt completely in his rescue process. he suddenly fell down to the earth in the South region of bharatvarsh near kishkindha.
So , we see the very close similarity of Greek myth and Hindu myth, let this photograph give more clear idea,
So , we see the very close similarity of Greek myth and Hindu myth, let this photograph give more clear idea,
The famous mythological topic of the fall of Icarus in the narration of Ovid inspired Brueghel around 1555 to this painting of the same name: Icarus falls and drowns when his wings, made out of wax, came too close to the burning sun and melted. The surroundings, specifically the peasant, the shepherd and the fisherman, is ignorant to his plight.
A METAPHOR EMPLOYED IN “BADGIRLS”5) Read this article by Bhagat Singh. In light of the arguments made by Bhagat Singh in this article, can you re-write last monologue of Doctor Faustus?
I'm not rewriting of Dr fautas'' monologue , on Bhagatsinh's argument I think I can compare them well.....
So I starts my with Dr. Fautas's monologue,
- At the clock strikes 11, fastus khows that he committed wrong and he started repent and request God to save his life
- when Bhagatsinh hanged he told his friend that " I will never pray God"whenever I was dieing it is a kind of insult and moral down for me I am not selfish to pray God for save my life"
- Dr. Fastus will look to God and acknowledges that one drop of Christ's blood can save his life.
- Bhagatsinh overturn that idea he says that, Instead of worshipping God, we have to challenging them. "Bhagatsinh believed that Every Progressive man never Be Believer"
- Dr. Fautas think that God is Angry on him because he done bad sins, he started more repent.
- Bhagatsinh unfold The British rulers strategy that they can rules over us with showing a guns they dispels our intelligence and we are very fool puppets of them. So ohh... Faustus don't rely on God.
- After his failed attempt at repentance, Faustus, in despair, calls for the mountains to fall on him and wishes for the earth to swallow him up. But then, concluding that the earth won't hide him.
- Bhagatsinh refute and tells Dr FAUSTUS, open your eyes see millions of people dying of hunger in slums and hunts dirtier than grim dungeons of prisons, just see the labourers, patiently or Say apathetically while the Rich vampires suck their blood...ohh fastus mercy on you... their is no difference between you and the laboures they also exploited by Power and now you also make your place in their list bacause Lucifer is becoming a power now you have to hide your self...save your life...ohh fastus....
- Dr. Fautas pleads to God requesting that, after spending a thousand or even a hundred thousand years in hell, he might be saved from his misery. But, alas, Faustus is forced to acknowledge the reality that "no end is limited to damned souls" he uses some natural aliments like FOGGY MIST he wants to be that so Lucifer can not see him, he also wants to commpres himself in THUNDERSTORM .
- Bhagatsinh again give his glimpse as a Atheist and ask that If you believe in God, who created the Earth or Universe , he wants to know that why he created this world which is full of woe and grif, where not even one person lives in peace, Bhagatsinh further said I ledl my life without any repentance I sacrifice my life for freedom , you( Dr.Fustus) loose your freedom and Life behind your " MORBID AMBITIONS" Earth is full of pain than why you want to survive on this world....
- In his final hour, Faustus comes to the realization that he is getting the short end of the deal he has made with the devil and how even all the power he had possessed is fleeting in the face of eternity. Faustus' final soliloquy is a realistic look inside the mind of someone who stands on the threshold of forever and knows his destination. After lot of repenting and forgiveness but Lucifer can not leave him he took Faustus soul with him in hell and his soul perpetually burs in hell.
- Bhagatsinh argued that who ever challenged any superior power people calling them "HYPOTHETIC" if you challenging a evils , even imI challenging the idea of " IDOL WORSHIPPING" people know me as a Hypocrite. As per HINDUS , would say that , who so ever undea goes suffering in this life, must have been a sinner in his previous birth...ohh fastus Mercy for you.... make a good sin... In the concluding part of my argument I like to some important points such as, The origin of God thought is that, man created a God, man created a hell and heaven as well as evils. God is a imagination, God with his whimsical lawa and perental generosity was painted with imagination, if God is generous than why he allowed Lucifer to kill fauatus, society must have to fight against this beliefs...may we can save some one's life like Dr.Faustus......
- As we all say,
- " All IS WELL IN GODS KINGDOM.."
When we talk about Karna in the reference of Dr. Fastus ,I find one similarity in both character that Faust and karna both are very powerful and knowledgeable but the reason of their fall is they choose a wrong path. Karna choose KAURVA and fauatus choose LUCIFER . If they both choose right path than still they are becomes the most powerful personalities in our history.
6) Summarise articles discussed in the class:
- Marlowe and God: Tragic Theology of Dr. Faustus
- Myth, Psychology and Marlowe's Doctor Faustus . This present article on Myth, Psychology and Marlowe's Dr. Faustus is about the psychological reading of Dr. Faustus. Here in this article we can find the analysis of Dr. Faustus's character with Jung's psychology about enantiodromia means opposite running course. When things get to their extreme, they turn into their opposite. Similarly, when Faustus gets extreme in his scholarly knowledge about science, medicine, law and so on then he turn opposite to it and tempted to do evil things. Furthermore, here one mythical figure also can helpful to study Character of Faustus that is Greek mythological figure Icarus when he is told by his father not to fly high close the Sun but he did not take that words seriously and melted his wings and fall down. Similarly, such incident happened with Faustus that many good men and angels warned him not to go against God but he didn't take it seriously and fall down. So, here we can say that as per the analysis of Jung that it is all about Psyche of humankind. Moreover, the psychological law embodied in the common dictum that genius and madness is near allied and Jung found that conscious and unconscious elements of the psyche exit in a compensatory relationship and hence we can see that Faustus seems demi-god in first scene and then change into zenith to Nadir after the alliance with Mephistophilis. Furthermore we come to know about ego inflation of Faustus that how his hubris built his psyche opposite to Mephistophilis. After that this article also throw light on the fondness of Faustus for Helen of troy. It is all about feminine anima in which Jung says that the anima represent the chaotic urge to life. So overall, this article much helpful to study the psychology of the character. Faustus confused between good and evil thing. He is like a modern man who want to free from the bondage of religion but as per the Jung's theory of psychology we can say that Faustus stuck between disintegrating Christian myth and potentially rejuvenating habit of mind.
- This article is worth reading to know the nature and greatness of Christopher Marlowe. There are many critics debated about the biography of Marlowe that whether he was atheist or not but if we see contemporary age then somehow we can say that Marlow was atheist. He was one of the prominent with among university wits and one of the great philosopher among Elizabethans like Bacon. He is the man who broke the traditional norms of literature. His themes were much different than other Elizabethan dramatist. Elizabethan plays are merely literary drawn from folklore and popular superstition and allied to the fantasy of dream rather than speculation of philosophy like Marlowe. His dream was transcendent supernatural that was unique contribution to Elizabethan drama. Characters of Marlowe do not cry out like Hamlet and King Lear but they are always in quest for something with hubristic daring like Faustus and Tamburlaine. Marlowe's heroes begin as lovers of the world, they would remake, would size their day and end as Nihilist. Further, Renaissance humanists inherited ancient philosophy of 'how to die' whereas Marlowe's philosophy is 'why men must die'. If some say that Faustus is arrogant, guilty of sin then some have to say that his fall is neither simple moral degradation nor conventional seduction from conscience and belief. For instance, compare the pattern of fate with Macbeth whose power at height and after decides to murder Duncan suddenly his path to the downward. Whereas, Faustus who is more moral being in beginning and his fall is moral seduction and discovery in which he humanized not degraded. Faustus' gains sympathy, love and humility of fellow men whereas Macbeth fall isolates from other fellow. Further, Marlowe attacks on the way of God in the final monologue. Many critics say that why Faustus does not save after repentance, here Marlowe conveys that God is a deity of power not deity of love. And Marlowe also uses Lucifer as a spectator in the last scene who is shrinks from the wrath of God rather than Hell. Further, Mephistophilis has compassion for Faustus. So in this way Marlowe attacks the God. So, at last we can say that Marlowe was against the Christian doctrine and practices of Churches, he imagines God as deity of Tamburlaine and deity of Faustus who is wrathful rather pitiable. So here we can say that Marlowe is one of the prominent philosophers who attacks on the divinity.
Good minute observation.
